Practical Advice for Surviving Today's Election (And Whatever Comes Next...)
As the nation heads to the polls today, it’s easy to feel that everything hinges on the election results. But at Identity Project (IDP), we believe that true, lasting change doesn’t come from political outcomes alone. Real transformation starts with a deeper hope—one that begins by trusting in God’s goodness, being shaped by Jesus’s True Humanity, and living out our faith as catalysts for restoration in the world around us.
Christian Idealism meets Realpolitiq
More than a century ago, G.K. Chesterton reflected on the difficulty of holding onto ideals in a world that often seeks to dismantle them. In his book Orthodoxy, he offered this profound insight:
“What has really happened is exactly the opposite. I’ve not lost my ideals in the least. My faith in fundamentals is exactly what it always was. What I have lost is my old childlike faith in practical politics.”– G.K. Chesterton
Chesterton’s insight is as relevant today as it was then. Politics can certainly drive change, but it’s also unpredictable, often leading to frustration and disappointment. When we place our hope in the shifting sands of political outcomes, we set ourselves up for disillusionment and exhaustion. But a Christian idealism grounded in eternal truths endures, rising above the swings of political trends.
Take Heart!
As Christians, our mission goes beyond political cycles. Today’s vote, significant as it may be, is only one chapter in the ongoing story of salvation history. True transformation—the kind that impacts individuals, families, and communities—comes through the journey of discipleship, allowing Jesus’s life and teachings to shape our own.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”– John 16:33 NIV
Our core message today is simple but powerful: real transformation begins by trusting God’s goodness and letting Jesus’s True Humanity shape our lives. This is the foundation of lasting change, one that empowers us to restore our world to its most human form.

Beyond Winners and Losers
It’s easy to tie our identity, and that of our nation, to today’s election. But Chesterton reminds us not to build our lives on the fragile foundation of practical politics.
While the quote above is tongue-in-cheek, Chesterton isn’t arguing that politics doesn’t matter—it does. But far too many build their life on an ever-changing political landscape. It’s a recipe for burnout, anger, and disillusionment.
As followers of Jesus, we’re called to root our lives in a hope that doesn’t waver with each election. Instead of letting the outcome define us, we can choose to embody His restoration—a reality that transcends political wins and losses.
Some Markers of Christlike Electoral Confidence
Though the results of tonight’s election will shape our nation’s future in meaningful ways, we can’t retreat into a “holy bubble” that ignores these real impacts. Here are some ways to live out our hope in the midst of our nation's need for restoration:
- Remember that God is sovereign. Scripture tells us that God is active in our political arena and uses earthly rulers to accomplish his salvation purposes. We may not always understand his ways, but we can rest in his promise.
- Pray like it matters. Approach God with confidence, knowing that prayer has always been the precursor to any great move of God. Pray for our leaders, our nation, and for a spirit of unity and peace. Boldly pray for national renewal and revival.
- Cultivate humility. In a world where everyone seems to have a strong opinion, the path of humility will truly stand out. We don’t need to have all the answers because our trust in God’s wisdom will speak volumes and open doors for connection.
- Be a good neighbor. Regardless of political differences, commit to showing kindness and respect to those around you. Our political culture has made it easy to label people based on their lawn sign: finding common ground can be revolutionary.
Build a legacy that lasts beyond the next 4 years
When the election results are in, remember this: our true calling is to be catalysts for lasting restoration. By trusting God’s goodness and letting Jesus shape our lives, we bring stability and hope to our families, communities, and beyond.
Imagine a world where this hope—not fleeting political victories—guides us. Together, we can help restore the world to its most human form, one step of faith at a time.
