The real question isn’t whether Halloween is inherently evil, but whether our actions on this day align with our identity in Christ and our calling to love God and neighbor.

The evolution of Halloween actually has its roots in All Saints’ Day (also known as “All Hallows”) on November 1. October 31 thus became “All Hallows’ Eve,” eventually shortened to Halloween.

Through centuries and various cultural influences, Halloween transformed into the more secular, costume-centered celebration we recognize today. Much of its current form is influenced not by ancient rituals but by American consumer culture, much like how Santa Claus transformed Christmas. Costumes, decorations, and candy aren’t rooted in any dark practices but have commercial, not ritual, origins.

As Paul writes in Colossians 2, Jesus has “disarmed the powers and authorities,” publicly declaring victory through His resurrection. The forces of darkness are real, but as Christians, we know they are defeated. Halloween doesn’t need to be a time to fear or glorify evil; instead, it can remind us of Jesus’s power over sin and death.

Paul’s words in Philippians 4:8 offer a guideline for any celebration: “Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just… think about these things.” Let Halloween be a time to celebrate with a heart that honors God’s truth, not one that magnifies darkness.
